Often times in sports you learn the ways to become the best player ever, though this does not ever get achieved without starting with the basics first. It does not matter what sport you are involved in (or any job for that matter) you want to start with the basics and progress towards more complex as you become more skilled in the event.
With the game of lacrosse, this starts out with being able to catch and throw the ball. Unlike many other sports, being able to use both hands, like a switch hitter in baseball, is essential to becoming a top level player in the game of lacrosse. This continues to improve with mastering techniques for cradling the ball as well as appropriately picking up ground balls. Without practice, you will realize that these skills will lack and will play a major role in your success on the field in a practice, scrimmage or game.
Often it is the players who want to skip over these tasks which may seem monotonous at times, but play a factor in the development of the skill level. This is definitely a sport where the quote “you get out of it what you put into it” comes in to play. The more effort you put forth in the basic skills, the better you will become as a player and teammate.
This is where the coach comes in and sets the tone of lacrosse by instilling the value that the basics present and justifying why you would practice them each and every day. Line drills, wall ball, ground ball drills, cradling and others should be emphasized daily so that they become second nature to the player, so that they feel comfortable on the field.
These basics necessities and more have been compiled into the “Commandments of Lacrosse”, which have been released in a new book by David Gardner. This having been a lacrosse coach for 10 years and playing for some of the top teams in the country at the high school and college level, David has developed a philosophy of coaching that focuses on developing the basics before anything else.
What the book also does which makes it stand out are the points on the mental and emotional aspects of the game and not just the physical ones. The Commandments of Lacrosse are all ways a player needs to approach the game of not only Lacrosse, but their everyday livelihood of being of good moral and sound character and fall under both boys and girls lacrosse, thus this is an appropriate book for anyone involved in the game of lacrosse from fan, to official, from player to coaches and parents.
The Commandments of Lacrosse come as both a physical book mailed to your home as well as digital access to the PDF for your personal iPad or computer and are available to be shipped worldwide.
