Review Of GDocsOpen: New Windows plugin to default open local Office documents with Google Docs

As you probably know, Google Docs can be used to view and edit any local document, be it a doc, xls, ppt, odt, etc.

GDocsOpen is growing in popularity due to it’s online availability, ease of use and, of course, because it is free.

The only way to open local documents with Google Docs is to open a Internet browser window, type docs.google.com, login to your Google account and then browse for the file you want to open. This takes time and it can be frustrating to repeat for all documents.

GDocsOpen is a Windows plugin to resolve this issue, allowing simple and direct document handling. It is a standalone application which integrates a browser window with a Google Docs editor.

GDocsOpen allows direct Google Docs editing in a more productive manner, because you can open all documents by just double clicking on them. You also have a history of the most recent documents opened, both local and remote( from your online account).

Another feature is the browse online documents, which pops up a nice tree with all online( remote) documents. If you choose to open by default office documents with GDocsOpen, document icons will be changed to reflect this.

You can choose the configuration options:

  1. open all or just a subset of Office documents directly
  2. saving your Google Docs login username and password. These are stored encrypted on your computer.
  3. default synchronize local and remote document versions

We recommended you configure it to open all document files with GDocsOpen. This way you just double click any document on your PC and it opens in an editor window, uploading it in the background to your Google Docs account as well.

GDocsOpen is available for download as a free, no limitation, 7 day trial.
Full version can be bought for $9.99.

You can watch a quick demonstration video of the main GDocsOpen features:

In conclusion, GDocsOpen is an excellent new application which provides a neat integration solution between Windows and Google Docs.
